If there's a better remix series going, it would be hard to find; in this fifth installment of the Mushroom Jazz series, Mark Farina once again manages to blend funk, soul , and hip-hop so effortlessly that sometimes it's hard to tell where one track leaves off and another begins. The fade from Sound Provider's "Autumn Evening Breeze" to DJ Numark's "Charlie 2na Comin' Thru" is a perfect example, with samples of the latter song popping up like they belonged in the original long before the actual segue takes place. Mixing skills aside, even if this was just a track-by-track compilation, the lineup alone (name check: J Boogie, Colossus, DJ Spinna, Pete Rock) makes these 21 prime cuts of groove meat a must-have party disc. It's the little things that separate the big boys from the rest of the pack, such as the Rodney Dangerfield samples on Thes One's "The Yacht Club" - not at all necessary, but a really nice touch. In short, put this on a party, put in on in your car, put it on your portable, put it on wherever you want to make heads bob, especially your own.
