Matt Sims (Mount Sims), the celebrated prodigy of DJ Hell, turned quite a few ears with his debut release (Ultra Sex) a few years ago, and eventually found himself touring extensively in promotion of his blossoming career. Unlike most of the Live-PA electronica performances clogging up the DJ booths of the world, Sims is actually able to fully perform his music live and on-the-spot; this escapade is what initially caught the attention of Hell, and led to greener pastures.
Now Sims is preparing to unleash his much-anticipated sophomore opus (Wild Light). Even more so than his debut album, Wild Light further explores Sims' deep abyss of minimal techno and darkly eccentric melodies. Grinding synthlines and strings escort neo-wave electro percussion in a dark wash of oscillating, pre-programmed distortion (Morning Birds Scream), while tracks like "Headless" absolutely throw melodic theory to the wind. Most of the tracks burn along for a few minutes gradually building in strength and mood, and eventually blistering into a grand finale that might be dissonantly similar to watching a tragic automobile accident in slow motion.
The album as a whole is tremendously imaginative and sonically sound, but the average listener might have their patience tested by the murky monotonous movements.
