Just in time for summer, a review of OM's Winter Sessions!
I was looking forward to hearing the latest from Johnny Fiasco, who mixes the second disc. After dropping great mixes from Collette, DJ Heather, and Kaskade, OM has really been the leader on producing the best deep house DJs mixes. In a way, this has maybe spoiled me and raised the bar as to what I expect from OM.
Disc 1 of Winter Sessions is mixed by Justin Martin. I have heard some of his remixes but never a mixed set. He starts the mix off well, dropping Skye's "What's Wrong with Me" coming off of the opener, James Taylor "Take Me Or Break Me." From there, it just gets into a lot of non-vocal, almost "filler" tracks. It may be that I have become used to most OM DJs playing vocal tracks with deep jazzy beats in the background. To me, the first CD suffers due to the lack of big vocal tracks mixed in. It ends up sounding more like an opener for Fiasco rather than a sharing headliner and stand-alone disc.
Disc 2 makes up for Disc 1, as expected, as Johnny Fiasco starts off with two great tracks leading into JT Donaldson's remix of White Lotus Society "Space Cadillac." Fiasco doesn't follow the Kaskade and Collette trend of going from one vocal track to the next, but he nicely gives you an equal amount of vocal and dub mixes. DJ Disciple's "Deep Underground" sounds a little too familiar to the old Hooj Choons trance track "Roaches," but it is still catchy and enjoyable. Either way, if you enjoy Fiasco, you won't be disappointed with this mix.
