Oscar G, one half in the Murk duo, seems to have fallen into the trap that many DJ/Producers do - producing stellar original productions and remixes but being a little soft behind the tables. While I mean no disrespect to him (the man was DJing long before I had even heard my first house tune), his two Star 69 compilations have left me feeling a little empty afterwards. His first Live In Miami CD had its roots firmly planted in the deep, dark, underground and at times felt a little cold. Having said that, who could forget that moment when he effortlessly layered Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" with Green Velvet's "La La Land" and threw in samples of Angelo Kortez's "Drums" for good measure - talk about being WORKED! Unfortunatly it seems, those moments of musical genius on each compilation are few and far between and that chilly feeling is what resonates in the end.
The set does have some great tunes in it - a new remix of one of my favorite tracks of all time, Funky Green Dogs From Outerspace's "Reach for Me," "Move Your Body" by Sammy Peralta & DJ Rooster, an instrumental of Barbara Tucker's "Most Precious Love," and another gaga moment with Ralphi Rosario's classic "You Used To Hold Me" on top of Basement Jaxx's equally stellar "Fly Life." I just wish the entire set of this double disc compilation was as bangin!
