Andrea Doria and Mousse T have been tapped to remix Paul Johnson’s deep house track “Follow This Beat.” The Original mix, Mousse T’s remix and Andrea Doria’s mix all go somewhere totally unique with the track. Mousse T gives it an uplifting disco feel with retro-rhythm guitar tweaks, lush discofied sweeping string arrangements and of course, a funky bouncing bassline. What exactly is it about those Germans that makes them produce such uber-funky house music?! Andrea Doria brings a grittier vibe, re-translating the funk
into a distorted and fierce workout, adding some signature synth work and a super deep, hard and driving bassline. Basically all the sonic elements that gave “Bucci Bag” its down and dirty funk/electro atmosphere. Without a doubt the hardest interpretation of the bunch.
After repeated listening, it’s the Original Mix that catches my ear. It’s extremely simple- keeping it deep and melodic. It reminds me a bit of the old house track “Follow Me” by Aly-Us. The rolling bassline, the catchy melodic riff and minimal party-invoking
vocals work their magic via repetition. Hey, that’s what Deep House is does so well. And here, the brilliance is in the simplicity. Not a peak track at all. But imagine you’ve come to the club early for a few drinks and things are starting to heat up, and the DJ drops a simple track that somehow makes it seem like something serious is imminent. This is a tool for transitioning from a chilled-out house vibe to a deeper harder prelude to the big stuff to come. And if you’re just walking down the sidewalk with your headphones on,
it’ll definitely put that extra bounce in your step. Sometimes restraint can be a very effective way to achieve drama, and here’s a fine example.
