The Pinker Tones - The Million Color Revolution

Nacional

Bennetton fans, rejoice! The Pinker Tones have just stepped off the plane from Spain with the domestic delivery of a million new colors that have been poured in over forty countries since initial release in their homeland. Equal parts pop, rock, disco, lounge, and temporary insanity, this sophomore release from "Professor Manso" and "Mister Furia" was over two years in the making, the gestation no doubt slowed by their soundtrack and singles projects, including last summer's Sonido Total, the wild animated video for which received heavy rotation on MTV Europe. (Good news, Norte Americanos: It's included here and is being re-released in the US market). That track is sung in Spanish, but there's also Pink Freud, a quaint little ditty evoking handlebar mustaches and straw hats done auf Deutsch; the English-language call to arms Welcome To TMCR that's the albums's well-chosen lead track; the brief Señoras y Señores that precedes it, which despite its title is equal parts Spanish and English; and probably more besides, someone with more Berlitz training than we have will have to make that assessment, though. And it's not just linguistic diversity.

Trying to succintly review TMCR is reminiscent of the story of the group of blind men trying to describe an elephant by feeling its constituent parts (trunk-like legs, ropey tail, fans for ears): no one piece adequately captures the essence of the gloriously polyphonic whole. So the pure pop hooks of Love Tape don't prepare you for the Casio Caribbean madness of Mojo Moog that follows, in turn giving way to the gentle strumming of a ukulele, wailing of a musical saw, and spirited kazoo on Pinkerland Becania. Et cetera, und so weiter, és így tovább. Somehow this grab bag of musical styles and influences all manages to hang together; too often mixing tones produces nothing more than a muddy brown mess, but hats off to our lads in Barcelona, TMCR retains a prismatic quality throughout that's as captivating as it is fun. As we like to mangle the lyric around here, mi cabeza es galáctica!
