So how does one follow up the critically acclaimed freshman release Melody A.M., considered by some one of the best electronic albums of the last ten years. With hits like 'Poor Leno' and 'Sparks,' some wondered if Royksopp might have realized their full potential too early and we would be left to mediocre releases thereafter. Fortunately for music fans, this is definitely not true. Royksopp's second full album The Understanding is an electro-soul gem that not only showcases the group's eclectic sound but takes it a step further from the previous album, creating a stirring and evocative sound that approximates a cinematic experience of its own. Some may argue that it's a radical departure from its predecessor, but I see it as a natural progression of their art. The proof of this is no more evident than in the single 'Only This Moment.'
'Only this Moment' is another effortless single from Royksopp that creates a lush soundscape by using subtle hooks and well-placed cross-rhythms that almost seem absent-minded, yet you find yourself careening along and keeping in the groove. The song is plaintive, emotional, and full of melancholy, and fortunately the CD single keeps this mood the focus of each remix. The song features vocals from Royksopp themselves and new recruit Kate Havernick. The remixes are a superb Alan Braxe & Fred Falke mix that doesn't use the vocals until nearly four minutes in, a slightly more beat-oriented mix from Headman, and a heavier and darker Chab remix that actually gives the song a sense of urgency that the original and the other mixes lack. Royksopp do throw two of their own mixes into the equation but they have already done their damage with the original. These remixes definitely take away nothing from the song and go to show how versatile Royksopp can be, with each remix a delight in its own way.
While Royksopp will never be a huge hit with regular radio, they definitely have earned their spot as one of the most innovative and important artists in the electronic genre. 'Only This Moment' is a testament to this and I am glad that I got to soak in its lush atmosphere filled with radiant sunshine. I definitely recommend this CD single to anyone who loves music that is fresh and imaginative.
