One of the greatest joys of my childhood growing up in the city was lying in bed late at night and listening to the radio. In Boston we had some decent commercial outlets, but the real gems on the dial were the college-based stations. WRBB (Northeastern), WMBR (MIT), WHRB (Harvard) and WERS (Emerson) all had exceptional programming and forward thinking DJs working hard to push new music. While each station had their share of jazz, rock, folk and classical shows, the programs that really stuck a chord with me were the funk and R&B programs.
Hearing new music every night from performers like Kashif, Rick James, Prince and groups like Midnight Star, Morris Day and the Time, and Indeep really shaped my love for dance music. One of the most outstanding groups of the period was the S.O.S. Band. From their two million selling debut release SOS to equally outstanding albums like "Just The Way You Like It" and "Sands Of Time;" their output of reliable, quality releases continued until their breakup in 1989.
This disc features all their hits from chart toppers like (Take Your Time Do It Right, The Finest, Just Be Good To Me) to lesser-known classics (Weekend Girl, Have It Your Way). The depth and class that emanates from each track shows not only the breadth of their talent as performers, but truly takes you on a nostalgic trip back to the days of solid, soulful funk music. This CD is a pleasure to listen to and a must addition to the collection of any child of the 80s.
