The first question you're probably asking yourself is, "Why would Ultra Records want to release this?" The second would be, "Why is an acoustic guitar record being reviewed in this section of about.com?" As far as the first, I don't know. Secondly, the title says it all: This is an acoustic guitar cover album of dance songs-- some popular, some not so much.
I don't know who this record is truly supposed to appeal to, but here goes. The majority of the tracks are mellow acoustic guitar-driven tracks with the occasional splash of light percussion or strings. Overall, as an inspo project, it holds up pretty well. The guitar playing is professional, and Sagi's vocals are strong and convincing with some tight vocal stacks accentuating choruses in some tracks. Further, the cover choices are a good balance of well-known and not so popular songs. The strongest cuts are Snap's "Rhythm is a Dancer" (where some skillful playing recreates the original music melody and the track features a bit of nice symphony-type strings) and "Crazy Man" with its compelling guitar work and interesting percussion. Three tracks are imbued with a bit of Spanish flair.
On the downside, Sagi is covering a lot of songs that are female-fronted originals. So especially with the more popular ones, this-- in some listeners ears-- could work against him. Robin S's "Show Me Love" plods at a far too slow pace. This record will be a disappointment to anyone expecting a club record, but may be a real find for dance music listeners with a broad palette.
