Sharam Jey's 4 Da Loverz blazes through a selection of soul-infused house, breaks, and hip-hop. He's been the man behind essential remixes for artists like Mylo, Moby, Gwen Stefani, and Warren G; this, his solo effort, doesn't fail to impress. Attention to detail and overall irresistible grooves put Sharam Jey near the top of the heap of electronic and funky artists with soul-power. He's definitely in touch with the Mothership on this funky journey ranging from up-tempo house, mid tempo breaks, hip-hop dub and vocal.
The album starts with groovy mid-tempo house songs like "4 Da Loverz," with its catchy sample of "Maniac" layered with floating vocals, and "Push Your Body," an homage to Prince's sound featuring Jey on vocals. Midway through the CD, the tempo briefly drops to show off the stunning hip-hop dub skills of Sharam. Tracks like "Don't Say Nothing," "Back to the Time," and "Coma Beat" are all gems in the hip-hop dub category. He uses the style of his downtempo dubs in his house music and vice versa. These downtempo breaks happen midway and toward the end of the CD, and the one downtempo vocal song, "Honey Ball" is a real standout.
4 Da Loverz is a collection of up-tempo house/breaks and downtempo funk, about 25% being low tempo. The overall feel of the album is old school funk paired with space age electro- and very well crafted together. Sharam Jey's got the funk knob crunked to 11 for this one.
