Squarely aimed at the circuit crowd, Taborah's "I Am (The Rising)"
features the theme of finding yourself and being yourself. This is
Taborah's debut single and, although it was released in 2004, it's
being re-released with new mixes. The single has been featured on
plenty of circuit mix CDs, and these new mixes should keep it going
throughout the summer. The Friscia & Lamboy Anthem mix toughens up the
low end and adds big room synth stabs, creating a large hard house
sound. Giuseppe's mix brings in tribal drums and goes for a more
melodic approach- going heavily for the sing-a-long direction. In
doing so, the hardness is all but lost- traded out for a playschool
feeling.
The Barringer remix walks the line in between childlike melodies and
hard grooves. The sing-a-long thing is in full effect (read: cheese)
but the music is amped up and harder- giving a good balance to the
happy go lucky chords, melodies and vocals. The Johnny Rocks mix still
sounds good and familiar. If you're going to go for a vocal moment of
self affirming self-help, this mix is as good as any. I'm sorry, but
overall I get the feeling that Dr. Phil is in the house. But he's
alright- in miniscule doses. Rack this one up as a guilty pleasure.
This is one of those tracks that could work either magic or wreck the
floor, depending on the mood of the room. The lyrics are a little on
the adolescent side of the fence, and that's fine. File this with
Hillary Duff. The toughest mix of the bunch is Friscia & Lamboy Anthem
and the "sweetest" is Giuseppe D's. If you want to explore this vibe a
little more, you might try digging up a little Linda Eder.
