DJ Hyper nearly singlehandedly led the Y3K series revolution and will be noted as such for quite some time, but now comes a new era: welcome to the time of Y4K, my friends. I have, in my disc player, a few premium examples of the Y4K breaks/house revolution from Distintive|Breaks. If I am not mistaken, a couple of these CDs would be the best of the best from the catalogue and its crew over the last few years.
Uberzone presents Y4K. What weve got here folks is a prime example of just what Uberzone has to offer the ever-evolving world of breakbeat dance music. The album runs a gauntlet of various breakbeat styles from the muddy/proggy sounds of the UK underground to the hard anarchistic and sometimes trippy stylings of Koma & Bones and beyond. Some of the artists found on this CD are Uberzone (of course), Aquasky, BLIM, Christian J, and General MIDI among others. The CD keeps your attention because of the diverse sounds and styles within the atmosphere of Uberzones world. Breaks DJs: Be sure to watch for the new Uberzone vinyl releases coming to a deck near you.
Distinctive|Breaks presents Y4K: Past Lessons / Future Theories:
Theyve got 2 CDs here one for house one for breaks. This is a wonderful example of the label's diversity between the genres, and in a dance music industry filled with the dos and donts of music, it showcases not only various styles, but also styles within styles. This being a compilation of several different and varying artistic productions, its interesting to hear the tracks mixed together and developing as they do. Both CDs gallop along nicely; the mixes are mature and creative. Being a lover of house music, I am partial to the 4/4 album. The sounds of Hybrid, Way out West, S&P, Dub Pistols, and many other DB artists grace the speakers as the (sometimes proggy, sometimes filtered, sometimes UK) styles bounce around into the next track. The same goes for the breaks disc as Christian J, Sas, Dub Pistols, and other noted breaks artists find their way onto the compilation.
Good stuff all around from Richard and the Distinctive|Breaks crew.
