Ultra Records issues a bevy of CD compilations every year, usually with mixed results. Some of the tracklistings are excellent while some tend to miss the mark. The label is now debuting a new annual series that kicks of with this inaugural edition. "Ultra 2008" features recent hits and many new tracks that will surely be infiltrating dance floors and satellite radio in the next few months. This CD hits a home run thanks to some creative song choices and spot-on mixing.
Mixing duties have been handed over to Trevor Simpson and Cato K. Each one does one disc in this 2-disc set. Trevor keeps things upbeat and mainstream on the first disc with established artists like Pink (the Bimbo Jones mix of "Who Knew"), Kelly Clarkson (Dave Aude's re-rub of "Never Again"), and Mika (Moto Blanco's disco stomper remix of "Love Today) mingling with newcomers DJ Enur (currently climbing the pop charts with "Calabria") and Kim Leoni (BPM favorite "Alone"). Meanwhile, Cato K goes the trance/eurodance route, choosing to highlight songs by folks like Roger Sanchez ("Not Enough"), Tiesto ("Break My Fall" feat BT), and Filo & Peri (another BPM fave "Anthem"). These CDs are aimed at the casual listener and not the loyal clubheads. If you are looking for something underground and revolutionary, don't look here. As usual, the CDs are mixed well and the flow of the music never lets up. There are no odd changes on either disc, providing the listener with an overall great listening experience.
Ultra kicks off a new venture with the debut of "Ultra 2008." By combining current well-known acts with new up-and-comers and underground dance acts, the mixers have created a refreshing CD set that will keep your feet moving throughout 2008. Also be on the lookout for yet another new Ultra CD, Ultra Dance 09, hitting stores in late January. It's sure to be another interesting mix from the folks there.
