RS: When you're touring do you play the same music that you play
in Miami in other cities?
Oscar G: I try to, but in Miami there's so much trust built up in that
room that I just feel like I can play stuff that I really want to play
and they're up for it and they'll get into it and react in really
appreciative ways. When I spin other cities, I depend more on them
being happy to see me that time and that gets me through. A lot of
times I can do that but there's always gigs where the crowd is just
fighting you and it's kind of hard to do that so you've got to kind of
get on the candy.
RS: When you're playing live are you playing CD or vinyl or laptop?
Oscar G: CDs. I play on the CDJs.
RS: And when you're doing your production what software do you use?
Oscar G: Logic.
RS: Any outboard gear or all soft synths?
Oscar G: I have a room full of outboard gear that is not being used
because I'm pretty much software-based.
RS: You mentioned the EP with Chunky Buddha, are there any other
remixes or productions coming up we should know about?
Oscar G: We just reissued "Reach For Me," the Funky Green Dogs record
we had on our label Murk. We're basically reissuing all the old
catalogue with remixes through CR2 in the UK. We are also working on
original material because we're starting up our label Murk again, but
only as a digital label.
RS: Speaking of labels, how did you meet up with Nervous to put
together this compilation?
Oscar G: Actually I've known Mike for many years and I'd actually done
stuff for Nervous back in the 90s remember Byron Stingly, the lead
singer for Ten City. Recently I was at Pasha in New York and I was
playing Ralph Falcon's record "I Need Someone" which Nervous ended up
signing so I got in touch with them again. Through that, he found out
I was looking to do a new Space CD and we just talked about it and he
made it happen.
RS: You recently won Best Resident DJ in the Club World Awards,
how did you react to winning that award?
Oscar G: Danny Tenaglia presented the award to me and it was so great.
I've always looked up to him and still do the guys like him,
Francois K, and Junior Vasquez pretty much taught me to how play this
music. It was just great for him to hand me the award. The voting
panel for the Awards is so respected and to even be nominated was
amazing. It was for what I do at Space which is really important to
me, so it was quite cool.
RS: Why do you think Miami has such an amazing house scene?
Oscar G: There's such an influx of different cultures - there's such a
Latin influence here that there's a lot of energy when you step into a
room here. The crowd really responds to the music and there's a lot
of music history in this city so, especially with dance music. I
don't know, those things pretty much make it what it is.
RS: Is there anything you want to say to all your fans out there?
Oscar G: Thank you. That's it, thank you very much.
