You never know who you are going to run into in Miami. International house producer/DJ Tom Novy is known for his bouncy disco house and frisky DJ sets. His recent artist album "Pumpin'" spawned the international club hits "Your Body," "Now or Never," and "Take It," which is getting major play on US dance radio. Chatting with Tom, you quickly realize that his bouncy and upbeat music is a direct reflection of his energetic personality.
DJ Ron Slomowicz: I'm based in the US and sometimes we're completely backwards
when it comes to European releases and what's actually out. Right
now, your single with Lima "Take It" is doing well on dance radio.
Tell us about the song.
Tom Novy: "Take It" is about the atmosphere when clubs are about to
close and there's this certain kind of vibe when people are leaving
and they turn around once or twice and some of them are alone. That
is the last chance to grab somebody to find something for you to get
ready for the night. When the lights turn on, you watch the peoples'
faces and some of them are damaged and some of them are messed up, and
lots of them are drunk, but it's good to see them in their faces and
see the audience and wonder what are you up to right now. That's
probably a little bit of the vibe that describes "Take It."
RS: If I can go back in time, one of my favorite records you
ever did was the "Superstar" track with Eniac. What's your take on
the version that Commander Tom did sampling your sample, the
"Attention" song?
Tom Novy: Wow, that's way back. Come on, it's dance music and
everybody samples from everybody else. I did so many records over the
years and people did records over the years sampling my songs,
sampling my beats, and you can't do anything about it actually.
RS: I really like your refreshing attitude with your artist's
album, how you're not afraid to work with different producers and
different singers. What is it about you that ties everything
together?
Tom Novy: I think it's just for the love of music and it's just the
job I'm doing. I actually don't see it as a working job because it's
really my passion. I did MTV in Germany for seven years and that was
a real job, so it was sometimes a little big hard going to present
shows about music, because I was always into music.
Actually the secret is that I'm not taking myself too seriously as an artist and I can easily make jokes on myself and laugh about myself, so I think this is why a lot of people would probably be afraid that I'm not one of the typical artists. American artists, for example, are taking themselves so seriously and there are some of them that would never make jokes on themselves.
