Just Who Is Darren Emerson?
When it comes to electronic music, Darren Emerson is definitely no stranger to the scene or its fans. Not only was he a member of supergroup Underworld, but since his departure, his Underwater Records has become one of the leading labels in house music. While Emerson has been busy producing and managing a label, it seems he has been kind of quiet the past couple of years in regards to original material being released. That is all about to change with his upcoming release of a mix compilation for Global Underground, but fortunately we dont have to wait for his new single that will be included on the compilation. The new single is called "Crash Jack" and it definitely showcases Emersons unique style and has already garnered much attention and club play from the top DJs.
Crash Jack is An Intense Track
"Crash Jack" is a track that maintains a sharp focus with the use of crunchy piano lead chords and swirling synth sounds which eventually give way to pulsating drumbeats that build for several moments until it finally explodes into an onslaught of a bassline chorus that heralds the end of the track. The track manages to infuse a glorious mix of funk, house, and techno music that blends together to create a glorious mixture of chaos and decadent fun which definitely is meant to be enjoyed. The track is definitely one that is meant to be played at its loudest at the club and definitely has the versatility to add energy to any DJ set. While "Crack Jack" almost begs to be remixed, the remix that happens to accompany the original mix on the CD single is somewhat less inspired. Magik Johnson brings a very different edit to the track in a rework that relies on a more distorted deep techno house sound which removes the building vibe from the original and replaces it with a more electro slant. Unfortunately this becomes bland and repetitive very quickly and leaves you longing for the original version and its more awe-inspiring performance.
Overall
While Crash Jack might not be the most innovative sound to come from a Darren Emerson creation, it still inspires and definitely has great appeal when it comes to the dancefloor. The song definitely acts as a teaser for the next Global Underground release and helps build excitement for future projects for this gifted DJ and producer. I definitely give my approval for this track and look forward to hearing some even better remixes in the future so definitely check it out if you havent already.
Released September 2008 on Global Underground
