Previously unreleased track from Depeche Mode's "Playing The Angel" sessions finally sees the light of day to promote the band's current "The Best Of, Volume 1" CD. In the song's original incarnation, the track pleases with just the right blend of flailing guitars and bubbling electronics to underscore Dave Gahan's gloomy delivery. A plethora of remixes are offered with the best being the Trance-inflected Paul Van Dyk Vonyce Lounge Mix and the Electro-bleeping Booka Shade Full Vocal Mix as those are the two that best maintain the integrity of the original track while still adding enough of a new pump to the backbeat to make the tracks more clubworthy, with the Booka Shade mix even throwing in a nod to Depeche Mode's 802 hit "Behind The Wheel." Admittedly "Martyr" is not really in the league of earlier classics like "Behind The Wheel" or even more recent entries like "Precious," but it's worthy of investigation nonetheless.
