I remember when I first discovered QED was when I heard their cover of Def Leppard's hit song "Love Bites" from "Hysteria." The song was a classic metal ballad turned into a bona fide dance floor club hit.
I am always impressed when a ballad is turned into a sizzling dance hit because it's amazing to see a song transformed by another artist's vision. What is especially noteworthy is when the song crosses from one category into another. The song is given new life and exposure to a whole new audience.
QED is comprised of Valentin and Kristine Hendricks. The term is used in mathematics and colloquially means "proof is finished." Valentin is a sophisticated producer, writer, and remixer. He was remixed songs like "Beautiful" for Christina Aguilara, "Everytime" for Britney Spears, and Anna Vissi's gorgeous hit "Call Me." "Islands" is the third single to be released from QED's album "Mobius" which was released back 2003. The song follows QED's second single "Hardly A Day." The song has been given remixes by Valentin, Al B. Rich, and Mindless Faith. The "Mindless Faith vs. Valentin Mix" leans more toward the trance end of the spectrum while Valentin delivers a more mainstream club mix perfect for the radio.
Albert Castillo and Rich "Riddler" Pangilinan (Al B. Rich) serve up a solid mix with their distinctive synths and solid bassline which accentuate Kristine's haunting vocals. The real delight is when they extend the words "holding on" and build up to when Kristine sings "I was yours and you were mine, in another place and time, like two islands in the sea, separated endlessly."
