A few years ago, Valeria was starting to make some waves in the music scene. Her debut single "Ooh La La" was a Top 20 hit on the Billboard Dance charts and was beginning to garner some radio airplay. Label politics came around, though, and put a hold on her debut CD and it seemed that was the end of that. Now, six years later, she is back with a new single and a second chance at success. "Girl I Told Ya" is a quirky number featuring mixes by Dave Aude and Trent Cantrelle. Though nothing here is groundbreaking, the mixes add a nice touch to the original.
The Dave Aude Mix is his signature tech-house style that has been evident on many of his most recent productions. Lots of keyboards and synthesizers are in control of this mix. Valeria's vocals are more spoken than sung, so this minimal electro feel sounds good here. Assistance from Aria is provided as the "best friend" discussing the situation with her in the lyrics. The mix is catchy but not really all that memorable. Part of the problem is that this sound is becoming the standard go-to style for many mixers lately, so a lot of tracks have this simple electronic beat to them. The Trent Cantrelle Mix has the exact same feel and style but is a little tougher with the beats. It's a bit bouncier and there are more drums and effects. Overall, though, it's just as typical. Since the original track also utilizes the same musical technique, it was obviously easiest for the mixers to just continue in that vein.
Valeria returns to the dance floor with her new single "Girl I Told Ya." Unfortunately, the mixes for the song don't do anything to make it stand out. It's almost as if the mixers were just feeling lazy and threw some old beats on top of her vocals. Let's hope another single comes along soon with some remixes that make people want to find out more about this potential new pop sensation.
